Blogging Websites

Before you start your blogging websites, one of the most important questions you should ask yourself is where to blog. There are numerous blogging platforms available (both free and paid). Choosing the right one for you will make a big difference in how you use it.

Here is a list of free blog platforms that you could use to create a blog. The first 3 are probably the most popular blogging websites host:

  • Blogger
  • Wordpress
  • Tumblr
  • Livejournal
  • Typepad
  • MySpace
  • Travelpad

Before we review each of these platforms, I want to discuss your plan. It is very important to brainstorm and create a plan before jumping in with 2 feet into any blogging platform.

Throughout this website, I have talked about blogging. I believe there is a place for blogging, but if you want to build an ebusiness and really earn a passive income through blogging, then these platforms are not the best answer.

If we are going to invest our time into something, we might as well make some money along the way? Don't you think...

Blogging requires a steady rhythm of regular posts and these can posts often become old, and irrelevant. Visitors want to read the new posts and don't read the old ones. If you build a website with evergreen information, then visitors will come back again to read this and to read other info on your website.

Read this article that discusses the different between a Wordpress (blogging) website and a Keyword Focused Content Based eBusiness.

Blogger
One of the most common choices of blogging websites for beginners is Blogger. To set up a blog here requires absolutely no programming knowledge. Also, Blogger provides a free platform, so you can launch as many blogs as you would like, and it won't cost you a cent. You can add certain elements to your site through Blogger's dashboard, such as Adsense ad blocks, images, and even video. Beyond that, though, Blogger is a bit difficult to customize, so it may not be the best choice if you are looking to build a polished blogging website for business purposes.

Blogger will give you an extension as your website address, such as yoursite.blogger.com; however, you can purchase your own unique domain name for your blog (e.g., www.yoursite.com) for $10 a year. This helps your blog appear more professional to potential visitors, so it is well worth the nominal expense.

Wordpress
Wordpress is another popular platform for bloggers. This platform offers two options: Wordpress.com, in which the software is already installed on the site, and you can get it up and running in a matter of minutes; and Wordpress.org, in which you download the blogging software and upload it to a third party host server, such as Godaddy, Bluehost or Hostgator to name a few.

Which one you should choose depends largely on what you want to do with your blog, and how much time you want to invest in making it uniquely your own. If you simply want to build a basic blog, and do not plan to extensively use affiliate marketing and other methods to monetize your blog, the software offered by Wordpress.com will likely work just fine for you. On the other hand, if you want to be able to build a customized blog that features affiliate banners, a sophisticated design, and features that enhance the user's experience, you will probably do better to use the Wordpress.org software.

Tumblr.com
Like Blogger and Wordpress, Tumbler offers one of the free online blogging websites. It's relatively easy to create a Tumblr Blog. Tumblr's interface is dashboard based, with various features. Tumblr also has an iPhone, Blacberry and Android App that will allow you to post photos, videos, audio, links and text.

Livejournal.com
Livejournal.com is a combination social media platform and blogging platform. These blogging websites were popular with political bloggers and seems to be less popular these days. Livejournal has 5 different levels, the basic, or lowest level is free but have advertising included in the blog journal entries. Non-logged in users also see advertising.

Typepad.com has a free trial, but all their accounts are paid accounts from $9/mth to $30/mth. They market to non-technical used and have various themes. Typepad.com is also utilized by some large news providers. There is a LinkedIn app that will pull blog posts into LinkedIn.

Myspace
There are several other choices to consider when deciding where to blog. If you want to integrate blog posts with a highly extensive profile page, Myspace might be a good choice. This platform features a fairly basic blogging application, but it will allow you to build a homepage that provides a wealth of other features to attract and retain attention, such as picture galleries, videos, and reader polls. The downside of using Myspace, though, is that you will not be able to create your own website address.

Travelpod.com
This blog platform is designed specifically for travellers. If you want to create a blog for your friends and family to track your progress through a trip, then this is a great, free option. Upload pictures, discuss events and happenings as you explore and experience different adventures.

How To Achieve Success

As with any venture, success involves some planning. It is important to develop an action plan before you decide where to blog. Having a successful blog takes time an effort and using any of these platforms above will require a great deal of commitment and dedication to succeed.
