Register a Domain Name

What is a Domain Name? Essentially, a Domain Name is the address of your web business.

Before you begin your internet marketing venture, you will need to develop and launch a website. It is very difficult to build a successful business online without having your own site. Your own website will establish your credibility and helps you drive sales of your products and services. Before you begin building your website you will need to take a very important step - you will need to register a domain name.

A domain name is a bit like the sign in front of a retail store. It tells potential visitors what your site is about and what it can offer them. Thus, it is critical that you choose carefully before you register a domain name. Once you have chosen one, it will be very difficult to change it. If you do change the domain name of your site you could lose a lot of traffic as a result.

Before you register a domain name, visit a website hosting site such as, and use the domain name tool to explore possible names for your site. If you already have some ideas, try them out to see if they are available. If the domain name you want has already been taken by someone else, these sites will give you a number of alternatives that you can consider. Keep in mind, though, that some of these alternatives may be premium domain names, which the hosting company or a third party has already reserved. You can still purchase premium domain names, but doing so might cost you thousands of dollars.

Once you have made a selection that accurately reflects the nature and content of your website, registering a domain name is a fairly easy process. Essentially, all you need to do is fill out your contact information and purchase the name. It won't necessarily be yours forever, though; you will need to pay to renew it from time to time. Many new internet marketers only reserve their domain names for one year, but some registrars will allow you to reserve them for up to ten years. If possible, it is a good idea to reserve the name for as long as you can. Forgetting to renew a domain name could be a very costly mistake, especially if you have already built a substantial business around that name.

Assuming you are not purchasing a premium domain name, the cost to register a domain name is quite minimal. Many registrars will only charge between $10 and $20 per year for each domain name, and some will even give you a discount if you register the name for two years or more.

One add-on that may be worth a bit of extra money is making your domain name anonymous. Typically, when you register a domain name, anyone can look up the name to find out who owns it. In some cases, people can use this to find our your name, address, phone number, and even your email address. If you choose to make your registration anonymous, though, you can block people from using your domain name to gain access to your personal information.
